Jaime Munguia Was ‘Very Happy’ When Canelo Deal Was Done

27-year-old super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) was all smiles at his press conference, which was held in Beverly Hills, CA, on Tuesday afternoon. His upcoming fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) on Cinco de Mayo weekend will be one for the ages. A Mexican vs Mexican mega fight will headline the May 4 card, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Munguia was visibly worn out from the press conference and video row before sitting down with print media at a table nearby. Although he was a little worn out from the overwhelming amount of media in attendance, which comes along with a Canelo fight, Munguia stood true to his character and allowed everyone to ask him questions even if he had answered them 10-20 times before while in video row.

Munguia was taking it all in, and FightsATW was there to ask his reaction to finally getting the call that the fight was done. It was a question prompted by the previous fights he’s been negotiating that fell through. First was the Jermall Charlo one that fell apart when the networks couldn’t agree to terms after the fighters did, and then more recently, the Edgar Berlanga fight that fell apart due to Berlanga not agreeing to the financial terms. That was probably a blessing in disguise, as for Munguia, the Canelo fight means a lot more when it comes to legacy and money.

After taking a breath and thinking about the question, Munguia told FightsATW, “We were very happy to hear it as at the time, I was in the gym training when I received the call that the fight was done. After getting the call, the only thing left to do was to sign it, which I did, and I was delighted that the fight was made.” Following that, Munguia was asked if the bottle of champagne was popped knowing that this fight is huge for him, he laughed and said, “I’ll pop the champagne after the fight on May 4.”

Munguia is likely glad the press conference is over, as he can now return to the Wild Card Gym in L.A. to continue his training camp. Canelo vs Munguia will stream live on Prime PPV & PPV.com on May 4.
