Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Announces May 4 Fight & Rules Out Jaime Munguia

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), the undisputed king of the super middleweight division, has spoken, and his next fight will be on May 4. Although the opponent was not named, he ruled out fighting Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) as he reaffirmed his stance on facing a Mexican fighter during an exclusive sit-down with Box Azteca this morning.

On the Box Azteca broadcast, Canelo said,” Right now, we are finalizing some details for a fight in May. I cannot formally announce anything right now as we are still finalizing some details, but May 4 is the date.” He was then asked about the location of his next fight, to which Canelo responded with “Las Vegas.” Later on, as reported by Box Azteca, he would comment on not facing a Mexican in May, which rules out Munguia and WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs).

This news leads to the inevitable showdown, which Joe Santoliquito reported for The Ring Magazine that Canelo will face WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) on May 4.

Rumors have been running wild the past few days after Box Azteca announced Canelo would be going to their studios to provide a career update. Some said he would retire, while others speculated that he would face Munguia, Benavidez, Charlo, or Terence Crawford. Canelo is the king of the sport, and he will do things his way, which means calling the shots on those he faces.

This latest announcement has already received massive backlash on social media. Still, one thing is for sure: come May 4, everyone who is speaking on the announcement will be tuned in to see Canelo fight regardless of who he is facing.
