Oscar De La Hoya Lashes Out At ‘Rolly’ For ‘Talking Sh*t About Promoters’

It sure looks like the world is up in arms against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (15-2, 13 KOs). He recently lost his WBA super lightweight title in a showdown against Isaac Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs). And while this loss remains a nagging wound, boxer turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya wasted no time adding to Romero’s woes by stirring up their old drama.

In a video on X posted after Romero’s fight, De La Hoya rubbed his loss on his face and accused him of spending too much time beefing with promoters.

“Rollies, you dumba*s, getting knocked out. Focus on your opponent instead of focusing on me. Goddamit. All other fighters, learn from Rollies. Don’t talk shit about promoters,” he said. “There’s only three of us in the world.”

The Romero vs De La Hoya beef began when Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) picked Romero as a potential opponent over Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs). This did not sit well with his then promoter, De La Hoya, who had vouched for Haney. The fight did not materialize as Romero cashed out of the same. However, the drama remained. In fact, Romero even accused ‘The Golden Boy’ of being addicted to drugs ahead of his fight against Cruz.

On the other hand, De La Hoya addressed these comments, saying, “Rolly, he’s a character. He’s funny. He’s genuinely funny. And I think deep down inside, he’s a nice kid. But you don’t disrespect, you know? Like, there’s no need for it, you know, it’s all good. You’re not fighting me.”

“Classless Behavior”

The Cruz vs Romero fight night saw De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins at their unhinged best on the sidelines. This behavior was particularly prominent in their loud celebration after Romero’s loss to Cruz.

However, the hooting and cheering from the duo did not sit well with Leonard Ellerbe. The Mayweather Promotions CEO even accused them of showing “classless behavior” after the fight.

“Wow, Rolly is okay, but what if he wasn’t, and something tragic happened? Classless behavior from two HOF fighters and promoters, especially immediately after a fight, in my opinion,” he said. “Props again to Isaac Cruz and his team on a terrific performance.”
