David Benavidez’s (32-0, 26 KOs) apparent elbow shot that was only the beginning of an onslaught of punches that downed Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs) on their Cinco De Mayo weekend showdown has been kicking up quite the storm. However, trainer Robert Garcia believes there might be a lot more than meets the eye.

Talking to YSM Sports Media, Garcia was in awe of Benavidez’s performance on fight night.

“F**king Benavidez man. That f**ker, dude. Look, for some reason they gave him that name (The Mexican Monster). He’s a f*cking monster,” he said. Garcia was also certain about who he’d see emerge as the victor, albeit not as explosively. “I did pick Benavidez to win. But not in the way he did man. That motherf**ker. You know, I thought gaining 25 pounds, I thought he’d still be fast, but I always said he’s not going to have the same speed.”

However, Garcia was left surprised by Benavidez’s performance on fight night. He admitted that Zurdo looked much bigger and more intimidating, prompting him (Garcia) to almost reconsider, but Benavidez came through and proved that he was the “real deal”.

There is no denying that Benavidez absolutely steamrolled Ramirez, stopping him in the sixth round. He initially dropped him in the fourth round and then continued to batter him in the following rounds until the referee waved it off after Zurdo went down and his right eye was badly swollen shut.

But many fans also focused on the elbow during exchanges. Clips went viral showing Benavidez’s elbow clipping Zurdo as he threw a hook and pulled his arms back; some people thought it was sneaky and intentional.

When asked about the “nitpicked” elbow shot, Garcia only had one thing to say.

“No, look, when you’re in a fight and you’re throwing 10 punch combinations…it was just that moment. That elbow did land, but that’s not the cause of him knocking him out. He knocked him out coz he landed and broke his orbital bone. Put a beating on him,” he said.

“Don’t Discredit”

Zurdo was fully supportive of his opponent after fight night. On social media, he urged fans not to undermine Benavidez’s skill while also revealing his plans for a major comeback.

“Saturday didn’t go the way I planned. The loss is painful,” he wrote. “Don’t discredit what he brought. He was the better man that night, and I have nothing but respect for him and his team for the preparation they put in. Elbow or no elbow, it’s a fight at the end of the night. If we ever share that ring again, I’ll be better prepared, and I will get my revenge.”
