Super lightweight phenom Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) were once the closest of confidants. ‘KingRy’ looked up to Canelo both as a mentor and as a friend. However, the relationship between the duo later soured, with both fighters ceasing any contact with the other. In a surprising turn of events, Garcia recently gave an update on his relationship with Canelo.
Garcia was a guest on the Breakfast Club, which is part of the radio station Power 106’s morning programming. In conversation, he was asked if he was on talking terms with Alvarez again after their fallout.
“I try to message him all the time. Let’s golf, do something like we’re good,” Garcia said.
When asked if Alvarez replied to his messages, Garcia said there was “nothing serious.” The host then prodded about the reason behind the rift between the duo.
“I don’t even know, to be honest. It was just. I don’t know. He would just say stuff about me for no reason. Like, just call me up and tell me like, ‘I need you to be doing this.’ I went through a real mental health crisis; I don’t care what anybody says. I was real. They can say I faked it all they want. You weren’t in my shoes.,” he said. “I took it on the chin though. But he made me look like a clown.”

Garcia and Canelo had a falling out in 2021 after the former switched trainers. An action that was openly criticized by Alvarez. He stated that Garcia was wasting his talent and money. Moreover, Alvarez called him ungrateful and added that he still owed Eddy Reynoso money.
‘It’s fine’
Alvarez was previously a guest on the same podcast. When asked if they would be on good terms again, he mentioned that he had no bad blood with Garcia.
“Yeah, why not? I have nothing with Ryan (Garcia). A little things got out of control,” he said. “But he’s young, and sometimes you think it’s good what you say but I know it’s not. But no. It’s fine.”
While both fighters have said they share no animosity, it seems like the wounds would take time to heal.
