Super middleweight Callum Simpson avenged his lone career loss by winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Troy Williamson at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England. The scores were 117-112, 115-113, and 116-112 for Simpson.

In December, Williamson cooled the hot start Simpson had to his career by stopping him in the 11th round. It was Simpson’s fourth fight of the year. The rematch was risky; if the 29-year-old Simpson lost, his career trajectory would have completely changed. Instead, Simpson has reignited his career.

For this fight, Simpson trained with Rob McCracken, best known for his work with heavyweight belt-holder Anthony Joshua. The move appeared to work as Simpson landed eye-catching blows that rocked Williamson early in the bout. The story of the fight was summed up in the seventh round, when Williamson looked to be coming on strong only to be deterred by accurate, powerful shots from Simpson. Williamson was the worse for wear, showing the scars of battle and unsteady legs.

Simpson pulled away in the 10th and 11th, leaving no room for doubt, but a reckless final round saw both land clean blows that nearly altered the fight’s outcome.

In the end, the local guy Simpson improves to 19-1 (13 KOs), while the 34-year-old Williamson falls to 22-5-1 (16 KOs).

Other notable results: unbeaten Netherlands light heavyweight Gradus Kraus scored a first-round technical knockout over Sean Hemphill. Kraus, 25, improves to 11-0 (10 KOs), while the 30-year-old from New Orleans, Hemphill, falls to 19-4 (11 KOs).

Earlier in the evening, former heavyweight contender Frazer Clarke stopped an overmatched Lamah Griggs in two rounds. Clarke, a 35-year-old former British Olympic bronze medalist, returned to the ring after a two-fight losing streak and having lost three of his last four. In April, Justis Huni won a majority decision over Clarke, who is now 10-3-1 (8 KOs), while the 34-year-old Griggs is 3-14-1.
