Add FightsATW on GoogleSuper middleweight Wilkens Mathieu showed promise and vulnerabilities in his best win to date. Mathieu stopped Esquiva Falcao in the eighth round at the Capitole de Quebec in Quebec, Canada.
Mathieu is a 21-year-old who started strong, swarming the former title challenger Falcao in the first four rounds. Then, the fight began to change. Falcao, a tricky veteran from Vitoria, EspÃrito Santo, Brazil, began to find success as Mathieu appeared to tire after his quick start.
The difference was size, as Falcao looked smaller than Mathieu, who, in the end, landed a clubbing, fight-changing blow. With sixteen seconds left in the eighth round, Mathieu landed a left hook that wobbled Falcao. With Falcao putting his back on the ropes, Mathieu would flurry, sending Falcao to one knee. Falcao would get to his feet, but the referee would call the bout off, as Falcao looked frustrated.
Mathieu improves to 16-0 (11 KOs), as he is yet another high-profile title contender Eye of the Tiger has developed. Currently, the promotional entity has two super middleweight champions: WBC belt holder Christian Mbilli and IBF titlist Osleys Iglesias.
For Falcao, it is bittersweet, as the 2012 Olympic silver medalist was stopped before he could go to the corner. Falcao, 36, falls to 32-3 (21 KOs)
Wilkens Mathieu vs. Esquiva Falcao Undercard Results
In the co-feature, Leila Beaudoin of Levis, Quebec, Canada, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Paulina Angel of Medellin, Colombia, to capture the interim WBA junior lightweight title. It was a 100-90 shutout on all three judges’ cards.
Beaudoin, 30, lost a unanimous decision to the belt holder Alycia Baumgardner. She returned in April to defeat Victoria Noelia Bustos via unanimous decision.
Beaudoin now holds a record of 15-2 (2 KOs), while the 25-year-old Angel falls to 7-3-2 (3 KOs). It marks Angel’s second straight loss as WBA lightweight titleholder Stephanie Han defeated her in August.
Light heavyweight Mehmet Unal of Turkiye fought to a majority draw with Yoann Kongolo of Geneva, Switzerland. The scores were 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 in favor of Kongolo.
The word that comes to mind to describe the fight is underwhelming. The 33-year-old Unal had to battle back just to get a draw, with some probably believing he is lucky to live with an unblemished record. Unal is 15-0-1 (13 KOs), and the 38-year-old Kongolo is now 18-3-2 (7 KOs). Hopefully, the bout is revisited, as a rematch is warranted.
Light heavyweight Moreno Fendero of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, got an eighth-round technical knockout over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The time of the stoppage was 1:02.
Fendero dropped Gonzalez-Ortiz with a left hand in round six. A flurry of punches from Fendero ended the fight in the eighth round, as Gonzalez-Ortiz sat on the ropes, unable to throw punches back.
The 27-year-old Fendero improves to 15-0 (10 KOs), while Gonzalez-Ortiz, 36, falls to 21-2-1 (17 KOs). Gonzalez-Ortiz is 1-2 in his last two fights, as Edgar Berlanga stopped him in one round last year.
