What is next for Callum Simpson?

The super middleweight Simpson avenged his lone career loss to Troy Williamson by winning a 12-round unanimous decision at First Direct Arena in Leeds, England.

Simpson, a 29-year-old sporting a 19-1 (13 KOs) record, reclaimed his spot as a fascinating British contender on the world-class scene, but his ceiling remains unknown. Some will talk themselves into the prospect that he could be elite, and with his 6’ 3” frame, his size makes him interesting, but it has yet to be determined where he fares.

Let’s look at the most and least interesting future opponents for him.

Hamzah Sheeraz

Why: WBO super middleweight champ

Sheeraz has had a lackluster run as a champ against two relatively unknown opponents. Combine that with his draw with Carlos Adames, and he needs something despite major backing. A British collision with Simpson, if nothing else, could be a fight that excites local fans.

Pawel August

Why: He upset a good fighter

August was screwed out of a title shot. He defeated Simon Zachenhuber; his reward was the tough Jacob Bank. August presents a similar challenge to Simpson and could be a good regional foe.

Jacob Bank

Why: A good fight

Bank looks the part of a belt holder. He isn’t Osleys Iglesias, but he is good. If enough money is offered, this would be a fight that could advance boxing and show where Simpson stands.

Jimmy Kelly

Why: Tricky boxer

Kelly is a good boxer. He gave Jaime Munguia trouble early in their fight. Simpson is on the cusp of contending, so a fight with Kelly would be a good test.

Kevin Sadjo

Why: Facing a tough vet

Sadjo had a strong showing against Diego Pacheco in December and hasn’t appeared on a major telecast since. A bout with Simpson would be both interesting and notable. It would also be risky.
